Description

Communication buoys are ECF interplanetary communication satellites and stations. A single colony such as Belfast has at least three local carrier hubs, with several relays ground side the Hubs connect to a primary communications buoy(top of picture) responsible for interstellar communication. Communication relays also manage connections to a planet's reconnaissance satellites. On Epsilon Prime, the Asgard Relay is one of the planet's three northern carrier hubs with a total of 12 more. The small space station com buoy is reserved for major and important communications between governments and military sources have seven AIs monitoring information while a crew of 4 maintain the physical upkeep. In comparison to civilian buoys have hours and minutes the larger station can send a single to earth in 20 seconds.

Due to their importance, communications hubs can be optimal targets for Insurgent attacks. During the Great war on Rodiana all the hubs and buoys were the first forms of infrastructure to be destroyed. This allowed the planet to be cut off from Earth and the protective fleets. With the communications black out Rodinia fell into a state of war, no one person, group, or religion could control the planet.

So, data transfer rates over interstellar distances are pretty low? How fast does the FTL signal itself reach its target? Instantaneously, or does that take time as well?
