Over all the Reboot of Robocop is pretty bad ass, it opens in a similar manner to the original. Faux news with an over the top over opinionated reporter, Pat Novak(Samuel L Jackson) but this time its a lot more intense as the news quickly focuses in on the new era of unmanned ground combat vehicles. The news anchors walk in Tehran as ED209s and mansized drones dubbed EM-208s the ED209s are pretty tough and smart the terrorists that take them on only managed to damage one by jump off a building landing on top of it and blowing themselves up. The drones ask for people to put up their hands, scan them and then dismiss them. Its honestly much better than seeing Kinney get blasted by 20mm cannons after surrendering. The OCP drone in Tehran handle 10 well armed men in a matter of seconds and pretty much only kill the terrorists. The news feed then cuts out and Novak begins his debate on the USA's "robophobia"

The debate is that the Dreyfuss Act keeps these drones off US streets, and that its anachronistic because these drones are so advanced and crime is so high. Dangerous times call for drastic action and that is simiar to what we see with liberals demanding freedoms for safety. We see the senate hearing and the fact the drones feel nothing if they kill someone is the best reason to keep them out of American neighborhoods. So the we pan into Detroit Alex Murphy and his partner Jack Lewis (Michael Kenneth Williams) are hunting a drug dealing gun runner with police protection. A shoot out that is pretty bad, but that's not what forces Alex Murphy to become robocop. Robocop is born after Omnicorp convinces Alex's wife to sign over his body to make Robocop. After pressuring her into signing the papers we skip 3 months ahead. It seems like he's back to his old human self, but its just his dream. All that remains of Alex is his lungs, heart, brain, and right hand. He is in China and discovers a lot has changed. Alex wants to die after seeing all that remains of his body and the head of the program debates Alex out of pulling the plug. Soon things are up and running, but he is too slow to act so after hard wiring a new computer program to give robocop computer quick reflexes a shot live fire exercise takes place. Its all very impressive and keeps you on edge unlike the original which merely throws you from the death of Alex Murphy into the birth of Robocop we get to see a realistic development of the character. Also Robocop isn't this armored beast that can withstand anti-tank fire, any weapon above a .50BMG (12.7x99mm) round can take out his armor, but he is also incredibly mobile.

Robocop is cleared for service and Omnicorps holds a public press conference for the new and improved Alex Murphy. Unfortunately Alex can't handle the upload of the police data base and their new cyborg hero is pretty much on autopilot ignoring his wife and son. The press display is a huge success upon making his first appearance with the people of Detroit Robocop leaps through the air descends upon a man with lighting quick speed and busts a wanted murder/rapist/drug dealing scum bag who was standing next to two police officers.

Overall impression- FUCK YEAH!

Sticking with the original film's setting of interrupting the story with News bulletins we see Pat Novak making light of the fact 2 police men failed to arrest such a wanted criminal. Pat is on a roll he then brings up the Senetor championing the Dreyfuss act, and the head of OMNICorps for a debate. Its classically one sided, but the reality is that public trust in drones is swaying Novak fans are spilt 50/50 on the repeal of the Dreyfuss act. With robocop's stellar arrest rate in such a short time, and social media being flooded with cellphone footage of him in action people are taking to the streets. Congress announces that in its next session it will vote to repeal the Dreyfuss act after internet petitions and calls to Senators demand more Robocops. The scene breaks to an Ohio Senator giving a speech "I work for the people of Ohio and Ohio wants Robocops" this scene is probably one of the best things in the film we aren't just seeing the News we are seeing YouTube, Facebook, and other forms of Internet media flood with responses to Robocop's actions. While the first films couldn't for see this it is great to see how the film actually represents our current time in both satire such as Pat Novak who is cut from MSNBC cloth and jack up on steroids to provide us with biased information sold as fact. While we also see everyday reactions in videos and idiot blogs.

Then Murphy starts to regain control of his systems after his wife confronts him, as his son is now withdrawn from daily life and won't go to school because of both online and real life bullies. Its nice to know that in the 2028 the school system is still to fucking lazy to give a damn about bullies until someone goes postal or kills themselves. Soon Alex is back and he is hunting down his would be murders. He ends up killing two cops and is shut down by a OMNICorps's weapons expert turned handler before he kills the corrupt Police Chief. Pat Novak is on the scene championing the event as the machines will not turn corrupt and sell out to organized crime like the people Robocop killed had done. The execution styled killings are dressed to impress the public. Congress freaks out since Robocop marched through a police precinct and executed two corrupt cops before taking the kill count to 2 with the chief of police. The event and the out cry from people forces Congress into an emergency secession.

Meanwhile OMNI executives plan to kill Alex Murphy and keep the face and name as a cover for their drones. The executives scramble are response team, and the doctor who made robocop frees Murphy from his tracking and emergency shut down override controls. Robocop then heads to the headquarters building where his wife and son have been taken hostage. He rams his motorcycle through the building and engages several EM 208 drones with ED209 support. The scene is fast and the only thing keeping the ED209s from winning are basically the fact robocop can basically run circles arround them. Murphy manages to wound ED and uses it as cover while the other ED209s finish it off. The two fall several stories and Detroit SWAT led by Jack stop the ED209s from following after Robocop by surrendering to them and begin the time consuming process of showing them police ID.

Robocop is soon in battle with the man in charge of robot deployment and design an ex soldier with a 20mm grenade launcher designed to stop Robocop. He almost wins except for the fact Jack manages to shot him before he can kill robocop. Robocop then scares off the executives helicopter from landing and records the CEO's boastful threats for the world to see, and Detroit Swat makes the arrest. Robocop's prime directives of not acting against his makers is never broken instead he out wits them and lets human officers do the job.

The film closes on Robocop being rebuilt and getting to visit with his wife and son. The Dreyfuss act was repleaed but the President vetoed the findings and congress with need to begin a long slow process of voting. Pat Novak calls for the whistle blowing doctor to do hard time in a federal prison as the Robocop program was his doing. In all the polls seem to be stuck at 50/50 so Pat Novak finishes by telling the other 50% to fuck off and not be so sensitive.

In comparison the old film was somewhat better, but then again the 21st century is much harder to mock since everyone is SO sensitive. That and I think people wanted to see shameless dystopian satire of the current time. I think the new film has done a far better job on truly developing Alex Murphy as Robocop and what it would do to the man who is in the machine. I give the film a 9 out of 10 since we can't expect it to mock the times like it did the first time out. The setting and effects complimented the story instead of covering up an okay or average plot like the Robocop 2 and Robocop3. Honestly most people feel it falls short due to the fact its a bit more serious than the last and its satire is just a futile excuse what could have been. I however see the film in a deeper way since I was arround for the first films and saw the terrible TV and direct to VHS follow ups.

I guess one of the biggest problems when most of the people go deal with a remake or reboot is that they are totally on the old one, on the first director's work, in this case, Paul Verhoeven. Wich of course, makes sense, since the first time they saw the movie was on Verhoeven's direction.

But there's one thing about the Robocop franchise that can be observed in both cases here: They work better through the vision of outsiders, I'm no saying the second movie was crap, but for me it seemed a little out of purpose.

So it would make much more sense if people watch Elite Squad before watch this new Robocop instead of Verhoeven's Robocop, because the same as the first, it brings the trademarks it's director. I remember I felt the same thing when I saw Starship Troopers, it reminded me a lot of Robocop, but in fact was the style, both had the same director.

About Robocop, this new one follows exactly the same style of Padilha in his previous movies, and that's what I was expecting in fact. My biggest fear was not if this new one would make justice to the old, I didn't really care about it. The original is already made, I will aways like it, the same as I love the 1982 John Carpenter's The Thing and the 1951 Christian Niby's The Thing.
